Thrilled to have a guest blog from hard core supporter of women, Anthonissa Moger, The Hypnobirthing Midwife…
I’ve gotta say I’ve been a little concerned about something for a while now. I’d been thinking about it, talking to some of the midwives I work with and it’s come up a few times with some of the really experienced hypnobirthing teachers I know too. It’s the amount of new hypnobirthing teachers that seem to be popping up on every corner. Now I must first of all say that my hypnobirthing groups are full every week, so there is certainly demand for it! But what worries me is that if you have £700 to burn and three spare days, you can become a bonafide hypnobirthing teacher. And that is not a lot of time to learn all the secrets of birth!!
That’s right! I couldn’t believe it when I found out too. You don’t need any experience in a related discipline like midwifery, yoga, osteopathy etc to train. And that REALLY worries me A LOT.
So if you want to prepare for an empowering hypnobirth, how do you find the best teacher for you? Here are my top three tips:
- Choose a provider with teachers who have been supporting women in some capacity for at least three years. Experience really does go a long way!! We are all improving SOO much all the time we are working with women. You want to benefit from what a teacher has learnt along the way, the support of her colleagues, or the experience she brings from her other work.
- When it comes to most things, quality costs a little more and you get what you pay for. Hypnobirthing is no different. Cut back a little on spending on all that baby paraphernalia, I definitely bought a whole load of stuff for my daughter that never came out of the wrapper! But invest that money back into in quality birth education, that means the hypnobirthing teacher who knows a little bit more! Your birth stays with you forever and can shape your transition into motherhood- getting prepared is worth its weight in gold.
- You want to do your hypnobirthing course with a teacher that you think is frikkin awesome!! One that not only do you like, but who inspires you, makes you laugh AND makes you believe in yourself, your birth partner, your body AND your baby. There are lots of really amazing hypnobirthing teachers out there, so choose carefully. At the very least watch some of their videos so you can get a feel for their style and if you’re not sure, arrange to have a chat on the phone.
You are investing in one of the most important experiences of your life, and the right hypnobirthing teacher can make a profound difference to that.
